Time to Top Up the Kitty

This blog is a little brief as we’ve really just been trying to act like grown ups and top our our funds over the last few weeks. All of Nicola’s visiting relatives have made their way on wards or home so it’s finally time to knuckle down and earn some money, whilst enjoy Port Douglas of course. I’ll do my best to write an update without talking about too many of the dull bits, but that doesn’t leave much!

Meet Shei! She came on a little holiday from the RSPCA to stay with us. Hopefully she finds her forever home soon!

We took a trip to the Moonlight Cinema, an outdoor cinema, at one of the local resorts before they closed for the wet season and decided to see Pan. We have really been missing our trips to the cinema so have vowed to squeeze a few visits in over the next few months as there are a few good looking releases coming out. As the film started we were quickly surrounded by bats and fireflies all coming out for the night which really added to the magic of the film. It wasn’t long however before the heavens opened and the rest of the film was cancelled. A few days later though we were able to catch the film again at Cairns, this time indoors and without rain. We also had time to see The Martian the following week.

Nicola started her new cleaning job and I managed to retain the car in the daytime by convincing Nicola to cycle into work; although I did have to do the dry run cycle with her to work out the journey time. Meanwhile we approached the RSPCA where Nicola volunteers about fostering any dogs that might require it for short periods whilst we are in the area and for the last week have been spending time looking after the gorgeous Shei. She’s pretty well trained and laid back, the only problem she has is that she is a little on the skinny side but we are working to fix that. We’ve also had her down the beach and meeting all the local dogs and hopefully she’s had a great time away from the kennels. We even had her join us to visit Ryder and his dogs although she wasn’t as keen on jumping in the pool as she is with swimming at the beach! It’ll be said to see her home tomorrow.

Driving Bundy back to the depot!
Driving Bundy back to the depot!

My work on the Bally Hooley has escalated into me having driven one of the steam locomotives a couple of times and having spent a fair amount of time driving the diesel locomotive around, after we fixed her up a bit, when we have been working in the yard. I’ve helped out a bit more with some of the marketing and Facebook stuff but it’s just great to be working with customers again and hopefully making a positive impact on their holidays.

Joe and I took a ride down to Smithfield early on to pick up some fishing rods and have spent several afternoons sunning ourselves on jetties with a little fishing in the evenings after the sun disappears over the horizon. As of yet we’ve not caught any big sharks on our trips out but it’s been great dangling a rod again and it’s hard to complain when you’re sat at a place like this in the Australian sunshine.

The Crocodile Attack show at Hartley's Creek
The Crocodile Attack Show at Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures!

A few days ago we headed out to Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures with the voucher that Auntie Shaz had won a couple weeks back cane toad racing. Given it’s size and location the park is great value for money and bundles of fun! The guides for the shows were great and you not only get the thrill factor of being up close and personal with the crocodiles but you get a good education on how to avoid being croc food. Handy for living in this part of the world!

That’s pretty much our last few weeks, not to say that it hasn’t been another amazing few weeks but there are only so many beach visits you can blog about!
